Kalamos is the biggest island of a small complex in Lefkada’s region. The Castle of Kalamos, the so-called ‘Kastromonastiro’, was constructed in the late Roman Times and is located in the area between Kalamos and Episkopi. The fortress protected the area from the pirate attacks and later, during the Greek Revolution, was used as a shelter by the Greek families who came to Kalamos from Epirus and Sterea Ellada.
Unfortunately little information is available on this magnificent monument. The visitor may admire parts of its high surrounding wall and its beautiful interior arches that were used as bastions.
Under no official testimony, the mother of Georgios Karaiskakis is claimed to have been buried in the castle.
